The classic road from NJP to Darjeeling is the Hill Cart Road, the one the toy-train line runs beside. It's roughly three hours of driving if the road is clear, and it passes straight through Kurseong.
Here's the thing most first-timers don't expect: the first hour out of Siliguri is flat and busy. The hills only really start after Sukna, and from there the road winds up through tea estates with the railway track crossing back and forth. It's pretty, but it's also slow, and in the season there's traffic.
That's why our route goes up the other way. From NJP we head east along the Teesta to Kalijhora and turn up into Sittong. It's quieter, and it means your first day in the hills is spent in a village, not in a queue. Tinchuley and Lamahatta follow naturally from there, and you reach Darjeeling from above rather than below.
Kurseong then becomes the last stop on the way down. After an early Tiger Hill morning, the descent through the tea estates is relaxed. We stop at an estate for a walk and a cup, pick up momos in the bazaar, and still have you at NJP or Bagdogra by mid-afternoon.
Practical bits: hill roads mean short drives feel longer, so we keep any single stretch under three hours. If you're prone to motion sickness, sit in front and tell the driver, he'll take the corners gently. And if you have an evening flight from Bagdogra, tell us the time; we'll leave Darjeeling early enough that you're never watching the clock.
